Antoine Heckly, tell us about yourself?
I’m originally from Paris.
My first encounter with the island dates to 1981 and I moved here in 1993.
I’ve always painted.
My parents were painter and architect.
I’ve always had pencils and paintbrushes lying around and have never done anything else.
I’m also self-taught.
The famous little houses found in your paintings…
Yes. I was in love with those little houses.
When I arrived on the island in 1981, there was hardly anything but these little doll houses.
The island was in the image of these little houses: tiny but wonderful, full of charm and beauty.
St. Barts is fabulous for a painter, because everything is paintable.
Every cove is a painting in waiting.
Painting
What do you most like to paint?
Above all I love painting itself, so I love to paint anything. I use all sorts of techniques, watercolor, oil…
And I’m drawn to a lot of different subjects. Watery effects, portraits, nudes, collages, bubble series [series de bulles]…
I also paint lots of landscapes and views of the island as well as façades and views out windows.
I love details, and working out colors.
My painting is a form of hyper-realism, very composed.
Everything is sublimated, highly contrasted and highly saturated with light.
These works have really made me well known as a painter of the West Indies.
That suits me fine, since I really do feel like an adopted St. Barts islander now
